The lodge is situated in the Thornybush Game Reserve, which shares common boundaries with the Greater Kruger National Park and is approximately 12 000 hectares in size. This is big 5 country in the heart of South Africa's pristine bushveld.

Located on the seasonal Monwana River, the waterhole is strategically positioned so that animals are always within view. The Monwana river is the ecological backbone of the Thornybush Game Reserve, flowing briefly after heavy rains.

Facilities
All the facilities of Monwana Lodge are geared towards ensuring that your stay is as comfortable and entertaining as possible. The following facilities at the Lodge are available to our guests:

  • A swimming pool which faces the waterhole.
  • A Gazebo with comfortable chairs for your reading and leisure, over-looking the waterhole.
  • A Boma and large wooden deck which extends out onto the Monwana River.
  • A Curio shop.
  • In and outdoor dining areas.

Cuisine
All meals are freshly prepared in Monwana's kitchen and we cater to a wide variety of tastes. Meals are served in common dinning areas and can be enjoyed on a cold winter's night in the indoor dinning area with an open fire, or outside on a warm summer's evening with a view of the waterhole.

Activities
Pre-dawn wake up for tea and coffee, before departing on the morning game drive. An experienced ranger and tracker, with extensive knowledge of the area, will read the previous night's tracks and lead you to where the excitement is, for instance tracking the big five. Game drives are on an open Land Rover, which will ensure the best possible game viewing experience.

A full brunch is served on return, followed by a midday siesta, a refreshing swim or waiting for the game to quench their thirst at the waterhole.

High tea is served in the afternoon followed by another exciting game drive. A sundowner drink compliments the African sunset leading to the night drive. Night time brings out the predators and many other nocturnal animals. Spotting nightlife or hearing a lion roar in the distance is an exhilarating experience.

Return to camp to freshen up and enjoy a drink with your ranger and hostess to discuss the day's sightings. A three course dinner concludes the day.

Weather permitting, one can enjoy a typical South African braai on our deck over-looking the Monwana riverbed. This is the ideal South African way of relaxing around a cozy fire with the sounds of the African nightlife in the distance.
